Life insurance for diabetics UK

Almost all UK health experts agree that we are facing a massive increase in the number of people suffering from diabetes. Since 1996 the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 1.4 million to 2.6 million people. Diabetes has truly become a common disease.

By 2025 experts are forecasting that in excess of 4 million people will have diabetes, this will be driven by an ageing population and rapidly increasing number of obese and overweight people. As such most of the cases are expected to be Type 2 diabetes.

Life insurance concerns for diabetics

The thing which bothers most diabetic patients is choosing an affordable and suitable life insurance policy. Because these days there are companies which give you policies at a much higher premium rate than someone who is not suffering from diabetes. This simply is not a fair deal for a diabetic person who has their diabetes under full control.

Insurance companies look normally at your blood-sugar level and our hemoglobin A1C count to find how well you are responding to treatment. Normally when your A1C count level is under single digit like 6 or 7 this means that you can afford to have a normal policy and therefore normal premium rates. But if this goes into double figures then you will find a more expensive policy with higher premium rates.

The best way for diabetics to get affordable cover

The best thing you can do to convince your policy providers is to show your monthly test reports and show them that your weight and other factors are under total control.

General rules and concerns

As a general rule more the older you are when you are diagnosed diabetes the better policy you will get. There are two general levels of diabetes. Level 1 is considered dangerous at this stage you become either addicted to insulin or your sugar level always remains uncontrolled. In this scenario you can never get a good insurance policy. The only policies that you will get at that stage will be very expensive, sadly quite possibly prohibitively expensive. Then there is another level of diabetes which is treated different by life insurance companies, this is level 2 diabetes. At this level diabetes is considered under control. As you do not use insulin and your blood-sugar remains normal for the most of the time.

Policies will differ according to your treatment results. If you are responding well and you are living almost a normal life then your policy providers will be happy to give you a life insurance policy at normal rates. But if your treatment results differ day by day and you are not showing any progress then they will be forced to increase your premium.

So it is very important to maintain a good control over your disease. If you have some complication in your disease like you are having some kind of permanent loss due to the disease then you may find policy very expensive or you may become unable to take a policy at all.

So the point is even if you have diabetes, this does not mean that you become unfit for a term life insurance. In short if you try to remain fit even though you have diabetes you will be leading a normal life in the eye of the insurer and will be offered a premium at standard rates.
